Volunteers make a huge contribution to the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority and are a highly valued and appreciated part of the team. Volunteers are people of all ages and from all walks of life who generously give their time to help us monitor, improve, and conserve this special landscape, as well as enhancing the experience of residents and visitors.
Our opportunities
From practical work with our wardens and uplands teams, to heritage surveys, ecology work, and visitor support, there are a variety of ways to get involved and help look after the National Park. Opportunities vary throughout the year so the best way to find out about our current opportunities is to contact our Volunteer Development Officer.
Time commitment:
People volunteer on a weekly, fortnightly, or monthly basis, as suits them. The time commitment required for volunteering varies from role to role; Some roles are very flexible and designed to be carried out at your own convenience, whereas others are more structured and take place on a particular day each month. For some roles we ask volunteers to aim for a minimum frequency or duration – this is due to the staff and training time required, and also enables volunteers to get the most from the experience.
We will try to match you with the volunteering role that best suits your interests, availability, and circumstances.
Other Requirements
- Volunteers need to be 18+. If you are under 18 and would like to gain experience working within the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority, take a look at our Work Experience Scheme here.
- Enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment are essential for all our volunteering opportunities, along with a willingness to learn new skills and work as part of the wider Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority team. For most roles you’ll also need to be prepared to work with our wonderful Welsh weather – many activities involve getting rather wet and muddy!
- Volunteers need to provide their own suitable clothing and footwear, as well as food and drink for the day. We provide regular volunteers with branded clothing and the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and tools necessary for each task.
- Due to the practical nature of some of our tasks, and our remote and sometimes challenging landscape, a certain level of physical fitness is required for some volunteer roles. It is essential that you are confident that your general level of health and fitness is appropriate for the tasks undertaken.
- We ask that you please consider the environment before applying volunteer with us. If the Bannau Brycheiniog are more than 50 miles away from your address, please consider volunteering nearer to home. Your local area will appreciate it!
Reimbursement
While volunteers contribute their time and talents free of charge, we believe that the cost of volunteering should not be a barrier to getting involved, and so we offer volunteers reimbursement of reasonable travel expenses.
