Guided Walk celebrating the Bicentenary of the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal
Starting from Gilwern Wharf car park GR SO 243146 A varied route taking in two associated tramroads, three canal wharves and a stretch of the canal to reach Llanfoist. From there a pleasant path beside the river Usk will then be followed to rejoin the canal and back to the start. Level: Moderate, Dist: 18km (11 miles) Leader: Chris Barber. Bwlch with Magnitude
Leave Bwlch with a National Park warden to walk down and cross the river Usk at Llangynidr then join the canal for a section of flat walking before ascending Tor y Foel. Descend towards the Talybont reservoir to pick up the Usk Valley Walk around the northside of Tor y Foel and back to the canal, before the steep ascent back up to Bwlch. The finishing touch - bangers and mash and a warming cup of tea or coffee with the compliments of the New Inn at Bwlch. Distance: 11 miles. Ascent: 2500 feet. Grade: Strenuous. Cost: £6.50. Peter Jones' lively and fascinating illustrated talk on the history of the Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal which was built 200 years ago. A Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal 200th anniversary event. The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal at 200
The walk will initially follow the route of the railway that killed the canal, looking at the wharfs at Govilon and Llanfoist. Then visit Crawshay Bailey's grave, an iron bridge (the first in Wales) and an inclined plane (used for tram cars carrying limestone down from the quarries). The route back along the canal will pass Bailey's house and the site of the breach in the walls of the canal (an all too frequent event, even now!). Dist: 4 miles. Cost: £5. Booking essential. Cardiff Astronomical Society will once again be hosting an evening of stargazing at the Visitor Centre. The multi-talented author Llion Iwan will take you on an informal travel writing moderate walk around Penwyllt. Voices from the past whisper from every historical landmark on this beautiful and fascinating trail. Llion is the author of the acclaimed travel book O Afallon i Shangri La (Gwasg Gomer, 2001) which tells the story of an epic bike ride through one of the world’s most desolate places on earth in Tibet. Carreg Cennen’s Coed y Castell
This quiet woodland has much more to it than first meets the eye! Due to a geological fault, both Limestone and Old Red Sandstone are exposed here: these support different species, creating two very distinct habitats within the wood. Because of its special habitats, Coed y Castell is designated as a site of Special Scientific Interest and specialists from Swansea University DACE will be on hand during this moderate level walk to reveal some of its more interesting and hidden gems. Cribarth and Mynydd Du SSSI
Walk up on to the “sleeping giant” mountain with specialists from Swansea University DACE to see an outcrop of limestone with herb-rich grassland and nearby Millstone Grit which supports extensive areas of heathland dominated by heather and bilberry providing an ideal opportunity to see the fascinating variations in the area’s plant life. On a clear day there are fine views over Old Red Sandstone and across to a Millstone Grit escarpment at Penwyllt. The Dinefwr Literature Festival
a lively new festival celebrating the very best of literature This bilingual festival is the first of its kind! Featuring an eclectic mix of literature, music, comedy, cinema and children’s activities – doing for literature what the Green Man Festival has done for music. High quality literature events will be programmed alongside other art forms in the beautiful and inspiring surroundings of Dinefwr Park and Castle.
The impressive line-up will include multi-award-winning novelists, local storytellers, performance poets, children’s authors, singer-songwriters, script-writers plus a whole host of fringe acts guaranteed to appeal to children and adults alike. The festival site will have a dedicated camping field to set up a temporary home from home for the weekend. The site will also be brimming with outdoor entertainment, a variety of stalls, excellent local food and much, much more.
The Dinefwr Literature Festival is a collaboration between Literature Wales, the National Trust, and the University of Wales, Trinity Saint David (lead partner in the Coracle programme). The Festival is part funded by the Arts Council for Wales and European Regional Development Fund through the Interreg 4a programme. More details to follow!

The Hay Summer Food Festival is now in its 11th year, and the venue is the Memorial Car Park Town Centre, Hay on Wye.40 producers maximum will be allowed, with emphasis on quality produce. Milling around Talgarth
Join us for a moderate 8 mile circular walk through Trefecca to Mynydd Troed and Penyrwrlodd Long Barrow where the remains of at least fifteen humans, along with flint arrow heads and a flint knife and most interesting of all a hollow sheep bone which appears to be fashioned into a flute, making it the earliest musical instrument found in the British Isles! Come and view one of nature’s finest shows: the Perseid meteor shower, live from the dark skies above the National Park. Experts from Dark Sky Wales will help you explore the heavens in their portable planetarium; view stars and planets through telescopes. If it is cloudy there will be a range of lectures on the subject. Cost: £10.00 per person with no discounts. Children welcome but minimum age 10 years. The Naked Ladies of Hay
Join us and guest speaker Jon Saville on this lovely 4 mile moderate walk to see the deadly and at risk naked ladies of Hay, meadow saffron. We will follow Offa's Dyke footpath up to Henallt Common, a Special Site of Scientific Interest positioned on a steep sided, north-west facing sandstone scarp which supports a good population of plant species that are rare and declining in Wales, before returning back to Hay for lunch. Henallt Common is one of the best sites in Britain to see meadow saffron, which should be in full bloom with thousands of rosy-pink flowers on display. Suggested donation £3 per person. Join Owen Sheers in an exploration of the Llanthony Valley, with full and half-day options. A horse-trek for beginners in the morning will gently follow valley bridleways for a view of Skirrid Hill; the inspiration for Owen’s second poetry collection and subject of readings and discussion en route. The afternoon will start with a steep strenuous climb and follow a section of Offa’s Dyke Path. Owen will discuss the significance of this boundary between the Olchon and Llanthony valleys in his novel and recent feature film Resistance. You can choose to go on both or just one of these two events. No dogs please. Lunch is not included although pub food is available locally. The Brecon Beacons Food Festival is now in its fifteenth year and the venue is the Market Hall in Brecon. Already confirmed are Derek Brockway and Sue Charles from BBC Wales and the Ready Steady Cook Kitchen which will be inside with children’s competitions like last year. Five local school choirs will also be perfroming live on stage throughout the day. This event is one of the key premier Welsh Food Festivals in Wales. Brecon Beacons Park Society
The Brecon Beacons Park Society is an independent membership organisation which also offers walks for experienced walkers every Friday,Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday (no Friday walks between October and February). Non-members will be asked to make a donation of £5.00 each per walk; half price for the under16s, the unemployed and students.
